Hello, neighbour!

LocalShopsDirectory is a love letter to the little places: the cobbler, the corner café, the hardware shop that still sells single screws. Look them up by city and neighbourhood, see what their customers think, and get in touch with them directly. No ads, no sponsored spots, no paid plans. Just good local shops, fairly ranked.

How we rank

Stars on their own favour places with hardly any reviews: two 5-star ratings would beat hundreds of 4.7s. So every shop starts as if it had 10 ratings of 3.5 stars, and its real reviews move it from there. The more people who rate a place, the more their opinion counts.

3.75for 5.0 stars from just 2 reviews

A shop with no reviews yet stays at the 3.5-star starting line. Ties go to the one with more reviews. Money never comes into it.

We only publish a list once a city has at least 5 places in it, and a neighbourhood list once it has 3.

House rules for reviews

Reviews only help if they're honest, so each one is checked against these before it goes up.

  1. 1You were really thereWrite about shops you've actually visited, and what actually happened.
  2. 2Keep it about the visitThe service, the goods, the price, the people. Skip unrelated grumbles.
  3. 3Be kind, even on a bad dayNo threats, insults, harassment or hate, ever.
  4. 4Mind people's privacyNo phone numbers, home addresses or full names of staff or other shoppers.
  5. 5No marking your own homeworkOwners and staff can't review their own shop, or the one across the road.
  6. 6Nothing in exchangeNo reviews for discounts, freebies or cash, and shops mustn't offer them.

We take down reviews that break these rules, but never ones that are simply unhappy, and nobody can pay us to remove one.
